            <description><![CDATA[<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium">Graduate Student Research Day</span></strong><span style="font-size: medium">&nbsp;consists of 2 poster sessions and 3 oral presentation sessions.&nbsp;Submit an abstract and take advantage of the many opportunities to be awarded for your work!</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-size: medium">1st&nbsp;place ($500), 2nd place ($300)&nbsp;, and 3rd place&nbsp;($100) will be awarded to top presenters of each poster session.</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-size: medium">1st place ($500)&nbsp;will be awarded to&nbsp;the top presenter of each&nbsp;oral presentation session.</span></li>

            <title>GSRD Keynote Speaker 2012 Announcement</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>This year&rsquo;s Keynote Address will be given by Dr. Richard Schlegel, MD.,&nbsp;Ph.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Schlegel&rsquo;s laboratory at Georgetown developed the technology for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, for which the dominant patent for the vaccine technology was awarded by the U.S. Patent Office in 2005. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the HPV vaccine for use in June 2006.&nbsp;&nbsp;He received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University Medical School, and was a resident and post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School (Brigham Hospital) in the fields of Pathology and Virology.</p>
<div class="gu_profileitemcontent">His areas of research include: molecular biology and virology. He is currently developing a second generation vaccine that could be used to prevent HPV and decrease the incidence of cervical cancer. This vaccine is being developed for use in third world countries. His lab studies the biology of papillomaviruses and their role in the genesis of cervical cancer.</div>
